Amanda August
Executive Director
Jefferson Street Center

I am a proud Wilmington, DE native and resident who works, walks and wonders throughout our small city. After graduating high school, I left the state to travel and collect experiences around the country for over a decade. I had deeply impactful opportunities to connect with others - serving as an AmeriCorps member in Yavapai, AZ, working for Outward Bound in Philly, Baltimore and CA for several years as instructor and course director, and holding down more service sector jobs than I can count. When I returned to Delaware in 2016, I began serving as a case manager to support aging out foster youth and their transition to living independently.

During this time, as a non-traditional, first generation college student, I received my Bachelors from Prescott College and a Masters in Social Justice and Community Organizing. This experience led me to transition into my current role as the first staff member & Executive Director for a small, newer nonprofit, Jefferson Street Center. More recently, I also received an Executive Certificate in Social Impact Strategy from University of Pennsylvania and am currently finishing the last year of a 3-year program with the Community Development Institute at University of Delaware.

I am responsible for facilitating the growth of JSC and its transition from an all-volunteer 501(c)3 to a staffed organization focusing on equitable community development in Northwest Wilmington. We are working to create an accessible, incubator community hub, in partnership with Hanover Presbyterian Church. We also focus on leveraging resources to support the implementation of community-driven revitalization, beautification and stabilization efforts through a trauma-informed, place-based framework.

I love being outside - hiking, biking, climbing, boating or anything, really. I also get super excited about live music, traveling, community gardening, potlucks with friends, thrifting and working on my historic home in Wilmington!
